Saint Kitts and Nevis consists of two beautiful islands located in the Caribbean. The earliest inhabitants of Saint Kitts and Nevis were the Caribs. These islands were first explored by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The British occupied Saint Kitts and Nevis in 1623 and 1628 respectively.
The French also settled on these islands in 1627. The British and French fought for a century to gain complete control of Saint Kitts and Nevis. In 1713, these islands became a single British colony. Saint Kitts and Nevis became an associated state in 1967 and gained independence in 1983.
This small Caribbean country has a total area of 261 sq. Km, St. Kitts – 168 sq. Km, and Nevis – 93 sq. Today, 51,538 people live in the country. Both islands are famous for their pristine beaches, green valleys, rainforests and pleasant climate. The country’s economy is mainly based on sugar farming and tourism.

The capital is Baster on the large island of Saint Kitts. The smaller island of Nevis lies about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of St. Kitts across a shallow channel called “The Narrows”.
