Ukraine is home to the first university in Eastern Europe, the Ostroh Academy.
The Ostroh Academy – the first higher educational institution in Ukraine and Eastern Europe – was founded in 1576 by Prince Konstantin Vasyl Ostrohsky. Among the graduates of the academy is Hetman Petro Konashevich Sagaidachny.
Ukraine is also home to one of the oldest educational institutions in Eastern Europe – the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (founded in 1615), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
In addition, the agency reports that Ukraine currently ranks fourth in the world in terms of the level of education of the population. The general level of literacy of Ukrainians is 99.7%.
There are 198 universities, 62 academies, 83 institutes, 245 colleges, 97 technical schools, 117 schools and 1 conservatory operating in the higher education system of Ukraine.
Six domestic higher education institutions are represented in the QS World University Rankings, including Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.
Every year, higher educational institutions of Ukraine graduate about 640,000 graduates, of which 130,000 are engineers, 16,000 are specialists in the field of information technologies.

Of the twelve laurels of the world, 4 are in Ukraine. Three Orthodox and one Greek Catholic. These are the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Kyiv (in existence since 1051), the Pochaiv Lavra, Pochaiv, Ternopil Oblast (since 1833), the Holy Assumption Sviatohirsk Lavra, Sviatohirsk, Donetsk Oblast (has the status of a lavra since 2004) and the Holy Assumption Univ Lavra of the studio charter (Greek Catholic), Univ (since 1898). Other laurels: in Russia – 2, in Georgia – 1, in Poland – 1, in Romania – 1, in Palestine – 1, in Greece – 2.
